Don’t Get Rid of Mike Lowell Just Yet

As good as David Ortiz has been this year, and he has been pretty good, it should be pointed out that he has been awful against lefties. With three K’s yesterday against Brian Matusz, Ortiz is just 13-65 against southpaws this season and his OPS is 467 points lower than it is against right-handers. In essence, he has become Boston’s version of Curtis Granderson. Well, except that Ortiz, unlike Granderson, kills righties.

Given this evidence, doesn’t Francona have to mix things up a bit during the second half, particularly when the roster normalizes? You know, against tough lefties, catch Tek and start Victor Martinez at DH? Better yet, might the front office consider going out and getting a right-handed outfielder who can really mash lefties and DH on occasion? Someone like Mike Cameron was supposed to be. Just a thought.
