Fourteen Memorial Day Baseball Blasts

* What is the percentage of Americans who know what the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day? Veterans Day is a nice holiday but Memorial Day is top-shelf along with July 4 and Thanksgiving. So take a second today to think about the guys who DIDN’T come back.

* Jose Reyes is on FIRE. Yesterday, marked his seventh multi-hit game since May 21. Reyes is so hot (13-26) that some of the extra heat seems to have warmed Jeff Francouer as well.

* Are there any Brewer fans out there who don’t puke when they see Jeff Suppan?

* It wasn’t clear that Melky Cabrera was going to show up for the 2010 season but he has been on fire of late. He’s twelve for this last twenty-nine and he’s thrown in a few extras just for good measure.

* The Phillies have scored seven runs over their last eight games and three of those were against AAAA Ramon Ramirez. And this is supposed to be an American League lineup?

* Fourteen strikeouts in 5.2 innings? Jesus Christ, Detroit’s Max Scherzer had been a K machine in the NL but until he tossed that gem yesterday, Max had struck out more than four AL hitters in just one start this season.  For the record, I saw a great Springer Spaniel up in Portland on Thursday named Max.

* Another stellar performance from the Snakes pen yesterday  but on the bright side, Justin Upton broke a four-game hitless streak. It seems when I am not here to criticize, Upton can’t do anything right. But the second I say a word, he gets hot.

* Miguel Cabrera had some weekend against the As ….. eight for thirteen with four homeruns and a double. He cooled off a little mid-month but he is in the conversation for that AL player of the month.

* Was that Mark Teixiera who actually had a big hit for the Yankees yesterday? Remember all that talk about how Tex also started slow last season and he’ll pull it together this season. Well, at Memorial Day, his OPS this season is .726. Last season ….. 986.

* Derek Jeter has had multi-hit games in six of his last seven games (15-32). Guess that hand isn’t bothering him.

* Can anyone turn off this home run spigot in Toronto? Three more yesterday including number sixteen from Jose Bautista. That ties Bautista’s career high, but they have come in less than half the at bats he had in 2006.

* Mike Leake has been running into some bad luck or offensive malfeasance, take your pick. He has given up two earned runs over his last three starts and has nothing to show for it. That groundball ratio continues to be outstanding.

* Carlos Pena is seemingly hitting new lows daily. He is like The Euro of major league baseball. Pena went 0-4 yesterday with three more strikeouts.

* I realize they couldn’t take him anymore but just imagine for a second, what Toronto’s lineup would be doing this season with Alex Rios playing right. So far, last year’s deal has turned out to be a good trade for all parties involved.
